If you are installing a brand-new roof, you will definitely find yourself making a lot of important decisions, including whether or not you should go for roof rafters or trusses. While we’re pretty sure you’ve already heard these roofing terms thrown around at one point or another, what the difference is between the two is probably still a mystery to you.
Roof Rafters
Rafters are long planks (usually 2x10s or 2x12s) that slope down from the central ridge of your roof and intersect with the outer walls. These sturdy wooden beams provide support for the roof itself as well as the sheathing. Simply put, the rafters are like your roof’s skeleton.
Also known as stick framing, roof raters are generally less expensive than trusses. Roofing contractors will usually recommend that you go with this option if your budget is a bit tight or if you want more attic space.
Roof Trusses
On the other hand, roof trusses are prefabricated wooden structures that also integrate a triangular webbing of structural members to lend your roof stability and support. While trusses are a bit more expensive, they are a favorite among roofing contractors since they come to the worksite already pre-assembled and so are very quick and easy to install.
Most older homes utilize roof rafters while newly constructed ones tend to lean towards roof trusses. While each has its own advantages and disadvantages, picking the right one for you really depends on your own unique needs.
