A variety of criteria must be considered to determine how vulnerable your roof is to wind damage. Aside from air density and wind direction, there are still some factors that you should know.
Age
An outdated roof may sustain more wind-related damage, such as blown-off shingles, than a recently replaced roof. Fortunately, if your relatively new roof is regularly maintained, there’s no need to worry about it as much.
Building Quality
There are roofing materials that can be more vulnerable to wind damage than others. The style and quality of both the installation and the items used in the roofing system will affect the chances of wind damage.
Shape and Slope of Your Roof
As mentioned, different styles of roof structures come in various forms. Each shape can affect wind patterns and behavior in different ways. For example, a wind that blows parallel to the ridge of a gable roof blows along the roof. This means there is less risk of damage than a wind that blows to a house on a hipped roof. Part of the hipped roof is located perpendicular to the wind, increasing the likelihood of damage requiring roof repair.
Type of Construction
The extent of wind damage to the roofing system also varies with construction. For instance, modular and mobile houses are more likely to suffer damage than houses made with durable structures and higher-quality materials.
- Air density is affected by temperature. The thickness of cool air is higher than that of warm air. This indicates that, if cool and warm air is blowing at the same speed, the cooler, denser air will cause the building to have a higher wind load.
- Wind direction: Understanding the direction of damage-causing winds can help you determine where to look for damage. You may consider checking the damage pattern, looking for debris or checking for displaced claddings like your siding and trims.
