How to Confirm if You’re Working With a Local Roofer

October 7, 2022 by chelsea brooke

Your choice of roofing contractor can directly influence how your roof repair or installation is going to go. That’s why it’s crucial to hire someone with all the necessary qualifications, including license, bond and insurance. Aside from these, you should be choosing a local roofing professional. But how exactly do you tell if you’re working with one?

Working With a Local Roofer

Phone Number

Following a major weather event, some contractors may start knocking on your door to offer cheap roof repair or restoration services. These are most likely storm chasers, and they’re the furthest thing from a local roofing company. How else can they disappear so easily with your hard-earned cash? If they come knocking, have them give you their business number, which will likely have a different area code. A local roofer, however, will provide you with the right phone number – a local one – that you can use to call the company in case of a roofing emergency.

License Plates

Another way to pinpoint a local roofing contractor from someone who’s not is to check the plates on the company truck. You should be wary of license plates that are from out of state and be even more wary if the truck doesn’t have plates at all. Some storm chasers try to distract people by customizing their vehicle with a business logo, but it’s the license plate you should actually be focusing on at this moment. You can even take it further by asking the roofers if you can have a look at their drivers license, just to confirm that they’re actually local.

Availability

One fact about non-local roofers or storm chasers is that they usually approach you first, especially if a storm has recently passed your area. They’ll try to draw you in with a lower charge that seems too good to be true (and it usually is). A local roofing company, however, doesn’t make it a habit to drive around looking for work. If a homeowner needs their services, they’ll make that first call to schedule a roof evaluation.
