Whether they appeared due to storm or hail damage, roofing issues need to be addressed, as neglecting them may cause you more inconvenience in the future. And while your system is known to be complex, it requires people to have a deeper understanding of how it can be fixed or replaced, not just re-coating or re-covering its layers. In this post, we’ll list down the reasons why nailing a new roof over your existing one is discouraged.
- It is not recommended. Professional contractors usually don’t practice go-overs because they know they won’t last as long as a complete roof replacement. Nailing the new roof board onto the old roof will void most manufacturers’ warranties as the old roof must be removed before installation.
- It will add unnecessary weight to your roof. Placing another layer of heavy shingles on your roof ultimately adds weight to the top of your house, potentially reducing its structural strength. Also, the new shingles will absorb more heat, which wears down the new shingles than if they were installed on the wood sheathing.
- It won’t address leaks. Experts say a roof overlay won’t eliminate leaks and can even further conceal the problem due to multiple shingles layers. Moreover, water will seep between the layers and materialize in other spots, making patching very challenging.
- It will eventually require a replacement. Because a roof that has been re-roofed is more susceptible to storm blow-off than a newly replaced one, you’re more likely to need your roof replaced in a few years. As likely, this suggests double the labor and costs.
