When it comes to popularity, most will agree that shingle roofs are the most popular type of roofing in New Mexico. However, getting one isn’t just a matter of asking New Mexico roofers to give your home a shingle roof. There are a few types of shingles and knowing which one to choose is key to making the most out of your investment.
Wood shakes or shingles – A classic option, wood shakes consist of rough-cut rectangular pieces of similar size, while shingles have a more uniform fit. Wood shakes or shingles work best if you prefer a home with a more classic look. Wood shingles are considered one of the more expensive options available. Shakes cost a bit less than shingles, but not by much. Wood shakes do not absorb heat, and are considered energy-efficient, but require protection from termites and moisture damage, especially during the rainy season.
Organic shingles – Also known as asphalt shingles, these are popular because they are affordable, lightweight, and do not suffer termite or moisture damage unlike wood shingles. They look great on homes with either traditional or contemporary roof designs, and are relatively easy to replace. However, organic shingles are less durable, and tend to “curl” over time because of changes in temperature during different times of the year. Organic shingles are considered by roofers in New Mexico to have the lowest lifespan out of all other types of shingles.
Fiberglass shingles – This type of shingle is almost similar to organic shingles, except for a layer of glass fiber underneath the top layer. As a result, fiber glass shingles absorb less moisture and heat, and are less likely to curl or crack over time. It’s only downside is that it is a bit more expensive compared to organic shingles.
