For best results in roofing, it just makes sense to trust an experienced professional to do the job. The same applies to gutter installation as well. While gutter installation may not seem like a big deal – sometimes thought of to be simple enough to do on your own – it can greatly affect your home’s form and function. Not to mention that entrusting the job to rookies puts you at risk of installation mistakes that can have major ramifications for you.
These mistakes include:
- Wrong Slope
While gutter troughs look level, they actually have a slight slope to them to properly direct water into downspouts. A good rule of thumb is a slope of at least a quarter inch for every 10 feet of trough. With a slope that’s too sharp, steep gutters will lead to water splashing outside of the trough during heavy rains. It’s also important to ensure that slopes are in the right direction for correct water dispersal.
- Wrong Size
For gutters to be effective, they have to be able to direct all rainwater away from your roofing system. A wrong gutter size makes this difficult as it’s possible for rainwater to exceed gutter capacity. This will lead to water spilling, which can give rise to moisture and landscaping damage.
- Wrong Location
While it looks like gutters have to be directly at a roof’s edge to catch rainwater, they are actually installed a few inches away, making room for water to back up on the roof’s underside and drip below the edge. A gutter system located directly at the edge of a roof will miss this, causing rainwater to drain elsewhere.
