Malarkey Roofing Products® have recently infused 3M™ smog-reducing granules into their roofing products, which was named as one of TIME Magazine’s Inventions of 2018. Learn more about these products now.
Smog-Reducing Granules
Smog puts thousands at risk of developing respiratory illnesses. This is why 3M made a material for roofing shingles that can reduce smog. The granules are embedded throughout the shingle’s surface.
They are made with a specialized photocatalytic coating applied to the base mineral. This coating blends with the shingle’s color and is triggered by ultraviolet (UV) rays. Once the sun hits the shingles, radicals are emitted and convert nitrogen oxide (NOx) gases into water-soluble ions that improve air quality. The broken-down smog particles can then be washed away by rain, helping reduce NOx emission in communities.
Solution for Improving Environmental Impacts on Health
“3M is leading the way with roofing technology solutions for improving environmental impacts on human health and welfare,” 3M’s senior laboratory manager, Franklin Klink, said. “The roofing granules are a first for residential asphalt shingles. The new 3M granules will help roofing manufacturers develop high-quality, aesthetically pleasing shingles that can turn any roof into an active smog-reducing catalyst, essentially becoming smog’s worst enemy.”
The development of smog-reducing granules is part of 3M’s efforts to create sustainable products to improve lives. These products have already reduced the same amount of smog in the past year that 100,000 trees would have done.
