Factors Affecting Asphalt Shingle Roofs’ Wind Resistance

November 22, 2022 by chelsea brooke

The local climate can do a number on asphalt shingle roofs. Wind damage, in particular, involves shingles getting blown off their attachments, exposing the systems to water intrusion. Fortunately, this issue can be avoided by making sure the roofs are built with durability and weather resilience in mind. The ability of these systems to withstand wind damage, however, is dependent on a few factors.

Asphalt Shingle Roofs

Quality of the Roof Installation

The components that make up an asphalt shingle roof are only as good as the people behind their installation. To ensure the entire roofing structure remains intact even amid strong winds, each shingle must be attached to the decking using the correct number and placement of nails. The wind resistance of the roofing materials is also dependent on how well the nails are driven. Overdriven nails, as well as nails driven at an angle, cut into the shingles, thus reducing the shingles’ ability to resist winds over time.

Quality of the Roofing Shingles Used

Higher-quality asphalt shingles can withstand wind damage better than their lower-quality counterparts. Also, a residential roofing system that’s equipped with thicker decking and underlayment can provide better resistance against wind uplift than thinner ones. As a GAF Master Elite® contractor, we offer top-tier asphalt shingles equipped with Advanced Protection® Technology, which is an indication that these products passed stringent testing for wind and impact resistance. Be sure to get in touch with us to learn more about your options should you plan on investing in a new roof for your home.

Level of Roof Maintenance

Your asphalt shingle roof won’t experience extensive wear and tear due to strong winds when you keep it in good condition year-round. Make sure to do your part in protecting the system against threats that can diminish its weather resistance. For instance, trim back the branches from nearby trees. Winds cause these branches to scratch the surface of your roof as they sway, dislodging the protective granules off the shingles. They may also break off and crash down your roof when the winds are particularly strong.

Protect your roof against wind damage with the help of the pros at Goodrich Roofing. In addition to roof installations, we also provide wind damage roof repairs, as well as assistance for your wind damage insurance claims.
