Asphalt roof shingles can be installed in any climate. However, just like how roof installation during winter can be challenging, installing them when the weather is hot comes with difficulties, too. Here are some of the things that roofers have to deal with when applying asphalt shingles when it’s hot:
Storage
When the weather is hot, the roofers must ensure that they do not store the shingles in the jobsite for a long time. They should keep the stacks low and in an area where they are not exposed to direct sunlight. Stacking the shingles too high can cause bleed-through of the coating, staining or, worse, shingle distortion!
Removing Shingles From the Bundle
Asphalt shingles come with a release film that keeps them from sticking together when they are packed. But because of direct sunlight, the sealant can get stronger, and separating shingles from each other can be harder. It is important for the roofer to follow instructions from manufacturers to ensure that the shingles stay in good shape when they are removed from their bundle.
Steep Roofs
Installation on sloped roofing when the weather is hot can be problematic for roofers. When it is hot, the coating of the asphalt shingles can get a little soft so there’s a higher risk of slippage. Also, when the coating is soft, the shingles are more prone to scuffing caused by foot traffic. Roofers need to take extra care to avoid scuffing. Sometimes, the installers need to wait until the temperature and the shingles are a little cooler before they can work.
Limited Work Time
Due to the above-mentioned reasons, there are instances when the roofers have a very limited time to work. When days are extremely hot, the installation has to be done early in the morning before the temperature gets too high. Most of the time, too, roofers are limited to working on slopes that face the west in the morning and only on slopes that face the east late in the afternoon.
No matter what the climate is, there will always be some considerations to be made when installing roofing. That is why it is important that you only call seasoned roofers who know how to deal with challenges to install your asphalt roof shingles.
