Asphalt shingles are still the go-to roofing material of choice in the United States. But there are still a few myths about them that keep people from taking advantage of the great benefits they offer.
Myth #1: Asphalt Shingles Contain Asbestos
This may have been true at one time, but asphalt shingle manufacturers stopped incorporating asbestos in the manufacturing process in the 1960s. Before this, it was used to reduce the chances of the roofing material catching fire. Nowadays, asphalt shingles are no longer flammable because they are made with better and safer stabilizers. This means you no longer have to worry about them putting your health and safety at risk.
Myth #2: Asphalt Shingles Are Completely Made of Asphalt
Another myth is that the shingles are heavy because they are only made of asphalt. The roofing material has a layer of granules on top of a backing made of fiberglass or felt that has been soaked in asphalt. Asphalt shingles are preferred by residential roofing contractors because they are lightweight and easy to install.
Myth #3: High-Quality Asphalt Shingles Don’t Shed
You may notice granules on the ground or in your gutters during and a few days following roofing installation. This is entirely normal, so don’t be alarmed. These are just extra grains that may not have been embedded fully on the material. Over their lifespan, however, you may notice some of the shingles looking lighter in color. That’s likely because they’ve lost a significant amount of granules due to long-term exposure to weather.
Myth #4: Asphalt Shingles Are Not Energy-Efficient
Another asphalt shingle misconception is that they’re not energy-efficient. The truth is that a roof’s energy efficiency relies on a variety of conditions, and an asphalt roof can be quite energy-efficient if it is constructed properly. Choosing light-colored, ultraviolet (UV) reflective shingles can help you achieve energy efficiency as well since they absorb the sun’s heat less than their darker-colored counterparts.
