When a storm is headed to your area, you don’t have enough time to start from scratch when preparing for it. The storm won’t delay it’s arrival just so you can prepare. What if you didn’t have to deal with severe storm damage after the weather disturbance is over?
That’s possible if you keep in mind the following:
Install Storm Shutters
Exposed glass surfaces need protection from storms and strong winds. We recommend installing storm shutters to fortify glass windows and patio doors. You may also want to install impact-resistant windows and doors in case the storm is a particularly strong one.
Secure Doors
Patio and front doors should be secured. Install bolts and locks to keep them in place and protect you from people who might be taking advantage of the weather to find vulnerable properties. More importantly, your doors should close tightly so they will not be easily displaced by wind damage. If your door is weak, the whole house’s safety is compromised.
Keep Your Tools Nearby
Storm damage may cause door and window hinges to be misplaced and if your tools are outside or in the detached garage, you may not be able to do emergency repair. Though we don’t recommend that you handle the repairs yourself if you’re not knowledgeable in door and window repair, it’s still better if you have the tools to do minor repairs during such a time.
Inspect Roof Annually
When we install roofs, we make sure they are in good condition for many years. However, small damage may weaken your roof and the longer they are ignored, the worse they get. Goodrich Roofing recommends an annual inspection to see any wind or hail damage that needs immediate attention. We also carry out re-roofing services, in case the damage is worse.
Hire a Licensed and Bonded Contractor
We can never emphasize this enough. Storm chasers take advantage of the bad weather to perform questionable repairs that will leave you with a vulnerable roof system. You may save a bit now, but before the decade is over, you will be paying for a more expensive repair. Only trust local contractors who have been in business in your area for years and who can prove that they are licensed and bonded.
Goodrich Roofing wants to protect you from undue damage and unnecessary repairs. Keep these reminders in mind and call us at (505) 219-4450 for any repair concerns. We serve Albuquerque and the neighboring areas.
